As we start our spring break week, here are a few updates:
Gold Rush Day was a huge success! Many parents came to see our fourth grade musical, "Oh California" last Wednesday. Students enjoyed our wonderful Gold Rush luncheon, which was lovingly prepared by our fantastic parent volunteers! Thank you for helping to make this such a great day for all our fourth grade students!
STAR testing will begin on Tuesday, April 26. Although we have done some preparation in class, including taking practice tests, you can help you child to be successful on this test in several ways:
* Review any math chapters that your child needs to review to solidify their understanding.
* Use the STAR "released questions" (link is to the right) to help your child prepare for the test.
* Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep each night during the testing period.
* Have them eat a healthy breakfast each day before coming to school.
* Please make sure that your child arrives at school on time each day.
* Minimize their stress by emphasizing that effort, not perfect scores, is the expectation.
We finished Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson this week, and students took their final comprehension test on Thursday. Our next class book will be Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, a lovely story about the power of optimism and persistence in our lives.
In science, we had a great time observing the changes in our terrariums as part of our "Environments" unit. Next, we will learn about food webs, food chains, and adaptations. Students will also be assigned project on Earth's biomes that will be done as a Powerpoint presentation.
Students have been working hard on their "Saturday Night" projects in Social Studies. Although we finished most of the project in class, they may need to complete it during their spring break. Projects are due next Monday, April 25.
Have a great spring break!

Week of April 11
As we approach our spring break next week, there is so much happening in Room 17!
Gold Rush Day is tomorrow! Students will perform in their fourth grade musical, "Oh, California", singing traditional 49'er songs! After their concert, they will participate in various Gold Rush activities, do some Gold Rush Dancing, and have a 49'er style lunch! The students are really looking forward to having an action-packed and fun-filled day!
STAR testing is coming after spring break! We have already begun to take some practice tests in class in preparation for the testing which will begin on Tuesday, April 26 and end on Friday, April 29 for fourth grade. The most important thing for your child is to remind them that it is just one of many tests they have taken all year, and do everything to ensure this is a "stress-less" experience for them! If you would like to see the released questions from previous years' STAR tests, please click on the link to the right.
Also, if your child needs some review in certain math concepts, please take the time over spring break to re-introduce some concepts previously taught this year, such as fractions, algebraic concepts, and multiplication/division.
Ah -choo!! Is your child sneezing with runny eyes and bloody noses? They are probably experiencing the effects of a severe allergy season this spring due to all the late spring rains. We have almost run out of tissues, so we would appreciate any donations to the class of this item!
Students are working on a "Saturday Night" project as part of our Gold Rush Unit. Some students are working alone, while others are working in small groups (their choices). Please ask your child during the break if they need your assistance in building or supplying any materials for their project. It is due on Monday, 4/25.
Have a wonderful spring break with your family - only six more weeks of school!

Week of April 4
Spring has sprung in Room 17! Some of us came down with a bad case of "spring fever" last week with our sunny, warm weather! The weather has been great for growing and observing the plants in our terrariums - in a few weeks, students will transplant them to our school garden!
In the next 2 weeks before spring break, we will be reviewing some of the "released" test questions in preparation for the STAR test which starts on April 26. Please check the link to the right which allows you to access this information directly from the Calif. Dept. of Education.
We are speeding through our math chapters - the focus is on geometric concepts right now, including identification of plane figures, solid figures, and perimeter and area measurement. We are attempting to touch at least briefly on all 4th grade math standards - we will cover some of these concepts in more depth after the STAR test.
Gold Rush Day - you received a flyer for our upcoming "Gold Rush Day" on Weds., April 13. We are asking all 4th grade parents to donate $5 (cash only) to the Gold Rush luncheon, and we are seeking parent volunteers to prepare and serve the luncheon. Please fill out the information on the flyer and return it to your child's class no later than Friday, 4/8.
